Filipinos love to sing therefore I love to sing too.
Videoke as more commonly known is a staple for birthdays, weddings, Christmas holidays and even on a funeral wake.
Everyone sings – from grandma down to my 3 year old cousin. Even our national athletes and presidents can”t take the microphone off them. Truly, karaoke has become the national sport and pastime in the Philippines.
I think the best part about doing karaoke in the Philippines is that there are so many ways to do it! You can sing loud and proud on a stage, rent a room with a group of friends or sing by yourself at the comforts of your home.
I remember that one of my biggest reverse culture shock when I got back from Brussels was that Saturday nights are spent not in clubs but in karaoke bars. And if you”re at home, “there’s even that transforms a TV into a karaoke machine. You can”t escape the mic!
So, when you get a chance, stand-up and grab the microphone.
Here are the best karaoke songs (with some personal favourites) that definitely CAN and WILL rock the crowd! (or annoy them to death depending on how you perform):
Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
A classic and a “singalongable” tune that everyone seem to favour. Perfect for duets too with the males easily humming along.
Summer of 69 – Bryan Adams
The perfect “me and the mates” song. Who could forget that summer that we hope will last forever?! Those were the best days of my life!
Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Karaoke without a Bon Jovi song is like a party without a beer! This cherished 80″s song can transform a night into a karaoke fun night! Remember to scream “OOOHHHH”
I Want it That Way – Backstreet Boys
Of course, I won”t foget the 90″s, the era of my childhood! And who couldn”t forget Backstreet Boys? “I want it That Way” is a song that everyone knows but have forgot about.
Wonderwall – Oasis
The ultimate backpacker song is ALSO one of the ultimate karaoke song. Make sure you have a lighter flame to go along when singing in chorus.
My Heart will Go On – Celine Dion
We love Celine Dion! This song aptly named the “Titanic Song” is a classic favourite with women especially with my mum.
Dancing Queen – ABBA
We all love a good dance song – and in karaoke, dance songs can turn the crowd wild! This ABBA classic tune will surely rouse the audience to stand up and dance! If you can dance, you can jive… then you can sing too!
Don’t stop Believing – Journey
Everybody especially Filipinos loves the band Journey! We love Journey so much that even the current lead singer is Filipino! And thanks to Glee, their songs transcended generations to become a favourite of everyone. Their tunes are a bit hard to sing – but if you are have a voice that can match Steven Perry then do give it a try!
Wannabe – Spice Girls
In karaoke, you can never be wrong with a girl-theme song! And here”s where Spice Girls can come on the picture. For Wannabe, my personal favourite: “the tell-me-what-you-want rap part”
Angels – Robbie Williams
Angels by Robbie Williams are common on weddings and karaoke nights too. Nothing can be more romantic than singing to your miss this song – orchestra back-up optional.
Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Well, this is not one of the common ones but I have to put Red Hot Chili Peppers on the list. Under the Bridge is perfect for karaoke rest periods (after you do all the dance songs & 80″s rock hits). This is a personal favourite of mine even if I can hardly hit the tune.
My Way – Frank Sinatra
Finally, the most notorious karaoke song in the Philippines. Did you know that singing this song had been often associated to death & killings? Urban myth claims that some karaoke enthusiasts were killed from singing this song. So sing this at your own discretion! 😉
And as a bonus for scrolling way down the page – here’s a video of me on a karaoke back in Puerto Galera, The Philippines. Warning – watch on your discretion. Party on!
What are your favourite karaoke songs? Or your least favourite karaoke songs?
